Weight Loss Information PageIn veterinary hospitals across the nation, veterinarians will confirm that obesity is one of the "biggest" problems we see in our patients. This is true for both dog and cat patients.
Most pet owners do not realize that they are overfeeding their pet(s). Overfeeding usually starts when a pet is spayed or neutered. Once a pet is spayed or neutered, her/his metabolic rate slows down by 25%! Put simply, this means that a pet that has been spayed or neutered requires 25% fewer calories to maintain its weight. Any additional calories go into fat formation.
To make matters worse, the feeding recommendations on most pet foods are formulated for pets that have not been spayed/neutered. This explains why we commonly recommend to feed 25% less food to most obese patients.
Many owners believe that their pet's obesity is due to lack of exercise. This is not usually the case. Although exercise is good for all pets, only in a very few patients will increasing the level of exercise reduce the patient's weight. However, increased levels of low impact exercise is important in arthritic patients.
THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING A PET OWNER CAN DO TO GET THEIR PET'S WEIGHT DOWN IS TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FOOD THEY FEED THEIR PET! Always use an 8 oz measuring cup to measure out your pet's food.
